Scripps College Alumna Offers Advice about Commencement Addresses:

^ Whitney Eriksen, Scripps ’09 was one of eight sages who offered advice about what matters in a commencement address. Erickson said that commencement speakers must inspire graduates, family, friends, faculty and others – but they must lose the clichés:

"Give your own advice in your own words. We know today is the first day of the rest of our lives. Last year, for example, Legally Blonde screenwriter Kirsten Smith told Scripps College’s Class of 2008, ‘Today is the beginning of your Act 2.’ She nailed it."

In 1998, voters in a focus group were asked to close their eyes and imagine what a governor should look like. "They automatically pictured a man," says Barbara Lee, whose foundation promoting women's political advancement sponsored the survey. "The kind you see in those portraits hanging in statehouse hallways."
